Looking Back at a Successful 2023
Coming up on the end of the year, the LaBore firm is looking back at a busy and successful 2023!
Our attorneys tried eight cases this year across the State of Minnesota from the Twin Cities to Duluth and Albert Lea with excellent results. A few highlights include Angela Shackleford and Kim Scriver obtaining a defense verdict in a traumatic brain injury case in Hennepin County in January. The plaintiff requested the jury award damages of approximately $3.5 million; the ultimate, net verdict was for $2,500. Also in January, Emilio Giuliani received an excellent jury trial result in Nicollet County District Court where the jury was requested to award damages of $150,000, and ultimately returned a verdict of $10,000. In March, Angela Shackleford received a defense verdict in Wright County District Court, and Kim Scriver also obtained a defense verdict in Freeborn County District Court. In September, Angela Shackleford obtained another defense verdict in Hennepin County District Court.
The firm was also active at the appellate level as well. In February, Emilio Giuliani and Kim Scriver received a favorable decision from the Minnesota Court of Appeals in an underinsured motorist benefits case. The court of appeals upheld the district court’s dismissal of an action based on principles of collateral estoppel, finding that a prior arbitration award the plaintiff received in his tort action precluded his underinsured (UIM) claim.
Throughout the year, our attorneys remained busy defending clients through all aspects of litigation including at several binding arbitrations. In August, Angela Shackleford was invited to speak at the Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association Trial Techniques Seminar in Duluth where she had the honor of sharing her “war stories” from past cases.
Overall, we are extremely grateful for the many opportunities we had to represent our clients in all aspects of litigation this past year, and we are looking forward to an equally exciting 2024.
